What is the best time to visit Mizoram?+
The best time to visit Mizoram is from October to March, when the weather is pleasant (11-24 degC) with clear skies - ideal for trekking and sightseeing. This period also coincides with festivals like Chapchar Kut. The June-September monsoon turns the hills lush green with spectacular waterfalls, though travel can be affected by landslides.
Do I need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit Mizoram?+
Yes. Indian citizens from outside Mizoram need an Inner Line Permit to enter the state. It can be applied for online through the official Mizoram ILP portal at ilp.mizoram.gov.in, or obtained on arrival at six designated entry points - Lengpui Airport, Sairang Rail Station near Aizawl, Vairengte, Bairabi, Kanhmun and Farkawn - with a photo ID such as Aadhaar or voter ID. The Sairang counter opened with the railway in September 2025 and issued more than 20,000 permits in its first three and a half months, so arriving by train is a practical way to get one. The portal offers a Temporary ILP valid for 7 days and a Temporary Stay Permit valid for 30 days; applications are accepted 7 days or less before your date of entry, and the fee is paid online once the application is verified. Longer stays use a Regular ILP, which requires a registered sponsor rather than a tourist application. Foreign nationals do not need an ILP — they need a Protected Area Permit instead (see the next question). Do foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) for Mizoram?+
Yes. Mizoram lies under the Protected Area regime, which the Ministry of Home Affairs reimposed for Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland in December 2024. The official Mizoram Tourism guidance is that all foreigners intending to visit Mizoram must obtain a Protected Area Permit before arriving, applied for online through the e-FRRO portal at indianfrro.gov.in/eservices. This replaced the earlier arrangement, in place from 2011, under which foreign visitors simply registered on arrival. Foreign nationals must also still register online within 24 hours of arriving, and accommodation providers file a Form C for each foreign guest. Rules in this area change, so confirm the current position before booking flights - and allow time, because a PAP is not something that can be sorted out at the airport. How do I reach Mizoram?+
By air into Lengpui Airport (AJL), about 32 km from Aizawl, with direct flights from Kolkata, Guwahati, Delhi and Imphal. By train to Sairang station, about 20 km from Aizawl on the Bairabi-Sairang line that opened in September 2025 - there are direct trains from Delhi (the weekly Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express 20507/20508, about 42 hours), from Kolkata (the Kolkata-Sairang Express 13125/13126, three days a week, about 31 hours) and from Guwahati (the Guwahati-Sairang Express 15609/15610, daily, an overnight of about 13.5 hours), plus a passenger service from Silchar. Timetables on this new line still get revised, so check IRCTC or NTES for exact times. By road via NH-306 from Silchar in Assam, roughly 180 km and 6-8 hours. Inner Line Permits are issued on arrival at both Sairang station and Lengpui Airport. We arrange airport and railway transfers for all guests.
How many days do I need for a Mizoram trip?+
Five to seven days suits most first visits: two days in Aizawl, a day at Reiek, and three or four days for Thenzawl, Champhai or Tamdil. Adding Phawngpui (Blue Mountain) in the far south needs at least four extra days because of the driving distance. Short three-day trips work well if you stay around Aizawl and Reiek.
